Blender 5.2 new features arrived on July 14, 2026 with the first long-term support release of the 5.x series, and despite the LTS label this is a big update. Node-based physics, a render memory cut of up to 80% and a compositor with 35 new nodes.

Blender 5.2 LTS: The First Long-Term Support Release of the 5 Series

The Blender Foundation shipped 5.2 on July 14, 2026, the first extended-support version of the 5.x line, with two years of updates guaranteed until July 2028. Despite the LTS label, this is not a minor update: it brings node-based physics, a drastic drop in Cycles memory usage and a major leap for the compositor. The release splash art was created by Joanna Kobierska.

Node-Based Physics: Hair and Cloth with the XPBD Solver

This is the most talked-about change: you can finally build a full simulation without leaving the node graph.

Cloth Dynamics and Hair Dynamics

The new Cloth Dynamics and Hair Dynamics systems live inside Geometry Nodes and are powered by the XPBD Solver, the same Extended Position Based Dynamics approach used by Houdini with Vellum and by Unreal Engine's cloth toolset. Everything is configured with nodes, leaving the classic physics panels behind.

Built-In Effectors

Effectors come out of the box: colliders, gravity and custom effectors built with the Closure and Custom Effector nodes, plus a tag-based filtering system (Tag & Filter) to decide what interacts with what.

What's Still Missing

The tool is still experimental: there is no advanced self-collision for cloth and no ready-made forces such as wind, turbulence or drag.

Geometry Nodes: Mesh Bevel, Audio and New Data Types

The Mesh Bevel node brings fine procedural control over edges and corners. Sample Sound Frequencies debuts the Sound socket, letting you drive animations with the frequency of an audio file. Lists arrive as a new data type for sequences of numbers or text, alongside Get/Set Geometry Bundle, and Empties can now take Geometry Nodes modifiers.

Shading: Thin Wall in the Principled BSDF

Thin Wall mode treats the surface as a thin sheet: paper, leaves, glass or soap bubbles resolve intuitively, without node hacks. As a bonus, it fixes a classic architecture problem: interiors that came out darker than they should because of light attenuation through glass without Thin Wall, and it renders faster.

Cycles: The Texture Cache Cuts Memory by Up to 80%

Cycles converts textures to .tx files, tiled and with mipmaps, like Arnold or Redshift, and no longer loads far-from-camera textures at full resolution. In the standard demos, memory usage drops by up to 80%, with the biggest reduction in Bistro; the cost is disk space and slightly longer render times. The cache is also used for OSL, previously handled by OpenImageIO.

Grease Pencil: Delaunay Fill

The Fill Tool gets a Delaunay algorithm: exact geometry from the strokes, automatic hole detection, zoom independence, inverted fill support and faster performance than the classic flood fill. Strokes converted to curves support Bézier, Catmull-Rom or NURBS, and line material points are generated at render time.

Everything Else: Compositor, Eevee, Sculpting and Pipeline

The compositor gains 35 new nodes and six socket types, with assets for film grain, painterly looks and world-camera transforms. Eevee overhauls Fast GI and the ambient occlusion pass and speeds up Workbench-style instancing by up to 2x, though the screen-space ray tracing cleanup may break compatibility in some scenes. Sculpting gets the Scene Project brush and primitives in Sculpt Mode; animation gets in-between operators, key selection by type in the Dope Sheet and a compositor strip in the Sequencer. The pipeline debuts Hydra 2.0, point clouds in glTF, color conversion on USD import and remote asset libraries for studios.
