GTA VI 'An Extended Look': Today's Trailer 3 as CGI

GTA VI premieres its Trailer 3, "An Extended Look", today, and for anyone working in 3D this is much more than gaming news: it is a masterclass in art direction, lighting and visual storytelling in near-real time.
What makes the "extended look" format special
Rockstar already used this format with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 shortly before launch: a guided tour of what you actually do in the world, mixing pre-rendered cinematography and in-engine captures. For a 3D artist, that hybrid is the perfect example of how to integrate cutscenes and gameplay without breaking visual coherence.
The GTA VI campaign reached this point with very little footage: Trailer 1, in December 2023, introduced Lucia and Vice City in 91 seconds, and Trailer 2, in May 2025, told Jason and Lucia's story. In between, only screenshots, cover art and a brief 25-second preview, which is why every frame of this new look will be dissected frame by frame.
What to watch for, technically
The announcement promises gameplay for the first time in the GTA VI campaign. Translation for artists: pay attention to the HUD, the camera response, how outdoor light behaves and how high-detail assets are handled in real time. It is the same pattern Rockstar used right before its previous launches: show the systems, not just the story, so players understand what they will actually do in the world.
The Leonida region, inspired by Florida, is a natural lighting test bed: beaches, swamps and storms. The community has spent months analyzing every screenshot for clues about facial animation, hair simulation and water behavior, and the day before the premiere Dazed magazine published seven character portraits that are already being studied as character art reference.

If you are learning lighting or composition, watching these reveals with a technical eye teaches more than any generic tutorial: study how they frame character shots, how they use color to separate Jason and Lucia, and how the camera behaves in chases.
At CGI Academy Hub you will find curated tutorials on lighting, lookdev and VFX to apply that same analytical eye to your projects and take your renders to the next level.
When and where to watch
The premiere is today, August 27: at 3:00 PM ET on Netflix (subscribers) and at 9:00 PM ET free on YouTube and the official GTA VI site. The game arrives on November 19, 2026.
